The story behind the product
We Built This Because We Had To
SignupGuard wasn't born in a boardroom. It was born out of frustration.
We were running SaaS products and dealing with a problem that every software company knows too well: fake signups and trial abuse. Every day, hundreds of throwaway email addresses were flooding our registration forms. Bots were creating accounts in bulk. Users were exploiting free trials with disposable emails, signing up over and over to avoid paying. Our free tiers were being hammered by people who had no intention of ever becoming real customers.
The numbers were brutal. Some months, over 40% of our signups were from disposable email addresses. Our support team was wasting hours cleaning up fake accounts. Our analytics were polluted with garbage data, making it impossible to understand real user behavior. Our infrastructure costs were inflated by phantom users who would never convert. And our conversion metrics? Completely unreliable.
We tried every solution on the market. Email verification APIs that only checked if a mailbox existed. CAPTCHA systems that annoyed real users but barely slowed down determined abusers. IP blocklists that were always outdated. None of them worked well enough. They were either too slow, too inaccurate, too expensive, or too complicated to integrate.
So We Built Our Own Solution
We decided to solve the problem ourselves. We started building an internal tool — a risk scoring engine that could evaluate every signup in real-time and flag the suspicious ones before they even made it into our database.
We began by compiling the largest database of disposable email providers we could find. Not just the obvious ones — we tracked the ephemeral domains that pop up for a few hours and disappear, the ones that hide behind legitimate-looking domain names, and the new providers that launch every week. We built automated systems to discover and catalogue new disposable email providers as they appeared.
Then we added IP intelligence. We mapped out VPN providers, proxy networks, Tor exit nodes, and data center IP ranges. We built behavioral analysis to detect patterns that indicated automated or fraudulent activity. We combined dozens of signals into a single risk score that could be computed in milliseconds.
The results were immediate. Fake signups dropped by over 90%. Our trial abuse problem virtually disappeared. Our analytics finally reflected real user behavior. Our support team stopped drowning in fake accounts. Our conversion data became trustworthy again.
From Internal Tool to Public Service
As we talked to other founders and engineering teams, we realized something: everyone had this problem. Every SaaS company, every startup offering free trials, every platform with user registration was fighting the same battle against fake signups. And most of them were losing.
The conversations kept going the same way: "How do you handle disposable emails?" "How do you stop people from abusing your free trial?" "How do you keep your signup data clean?" Every time, we found ourselves explaining our internal system and watching their eyes light up.
That's when we decided to turn our in-house solution into a public service. We spent months re-architecting the system for scale, building a developer-friendly API, creating comprehensive documentation, and hardening the infrastructure for enterprise-grade reliability. We designed it to be the tool we always wished existed when we were searching for a solution ourselves.
SignupGuard was born.
What SignupGuard Does
SignupGuard is an enterprise-grade risk scoring API that helps businesses detect and prevent fake signups, trial abuse, and fraudulent registrations. With a single API call, you get a comprehensive risk assessment that tells you whether a signup is legitimate or suspicious.
Email Risk Scoring
We maintain one of the largest databases of disposable, temporary, and high-risk email providers — over 300,000 domains and growing. We detect throwaway emails in real-time, including newly created providers that other services miss.
IP Intelligence
We analyze IP addresses against our database of over 10 million tracked IPs, identifying VPNs, proxies, Tor exit nodes, data centers, and other high-risk sources that indicate potential abuse.
Lightning Fast
Our API responds in under 100 milliseconds. It's designed to be called inline during your registration flow without adding noticeable latency for your users.
Always On
We maintain 99.99% uptime with redundant infrastructure, 24/7 monitoring, and automatic failover. Your signup flow depends on us, and we take that responsibility seriously.
What We Believe
Developers First
We're developers who build for developers. Our API is clean, well-documented, and easy to integrate. We provide SDKs, code examples, and thorough documentation because we know how frustrating it is to work with poorly documented APIs. If you can make an HTTP request, you can use SignupGuard.
Accuracy Over Everything
False positives are worse than missed detections. Blocking a real customer because of an inaccurate risk score is unacceptable. That's why we invest heavily in data quality, continuously validate our sources, and provide granular risk scores instead of simple binary decisions. You control the threshold. We give you the data.
Privacy and Security
We handle sensitive data and we treat it with the respect it deserves. We encrypt everything in transit and at rest. We don't sell your data. We comply with GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy regulations. We process data only to provide our service. Your data is your data.
Transparent Pricing
No hidden fees. No surprise charges. No enterprise-only pricing that requires a sales call to discover. Our pricing is published on our website and our 14-day money-back guarantee means you can try us risk-free. If we don't deliver value, you get your money back.
The Problem Is Bigger Than You Think
Trial abuse and fake signups cost the SaaS industry billions of dollars every year. It's not just about lost revenue from people dodging payments — it's about the cascading effects that touch every part of a business:
- Polluted Analytics: When 30-40% of your signups are fake, your metrics are meaningless. You can't make good decisions with bad data. Conversion rates, churn analysis, cohort tracking — all of it becomes unreliable.
- Wasted Engineering Time: Every fake account that makes it through creates downstream work. Support tickets from non-existent users. Database bloat. Edge cases in your code caused by bot behavior. Engineers spend time building workarounds instead of features.
- Infrastructure Costs: Fake users consume real resources. Server capacity, database storage, email sends, API calls to other services — all of it costs money, and none of it generates revenue.
- Damaged Sender Reputation: Sending onboarding emails to disposable addresses tanks your email deliverability. Bounces accumulate, your sender score drops, and eventually your real customers stop receiving your emails.
- Lost Revenue: Trial abusers who would otherwise convert to paying customers never do. They create a new account with a new disposable email every time their trial expires, using your product indefinitely without paying.
SignupGuard exists to eliminate these problems. We've lived through them ourselves, and we built the solution we needed.
